Love, unity, and the wayfarer's journey

The Sufi path understands love as an epistemology leading to divine knowledge, wherein the heart’s cry toward spiritual consciousness fulfills the Sufi’s mission of vicegerency; only through this fulfillment the Sufi realizes the self and, by knowing the self, he comes to know God, whose divine presence dwells within.

The central doctrine of Sufism called Unity (Wahdat) is the understanding of all phenomena as manifestation of a single reality (Tawhid) or being (Wujud). The essence of Being/Truth/God is devoid of any form, yet it is inseparable from every form either material or spiritual. This entails that every sign (Tajalli) is an aspect of the Truth.

The Sufis seek to unite with the divine through the established metaphor of lovers. They depend on love folk tales as allegories of spiritual love, in which the Murid, the wayfarer, embarks on a journey to reach out to his beloved, God. It is then that he can realize the state of the Perfect Man, al-insān al-kāmil.

In the journey, the wayfarer comes across archetypes.
